BOYS WHO D.A.R.E

is a reading program that offers the male child a full and equal literary opportunity, regardless of background, education and income of parents. Research consistently shows that children who get off to a good start in reading rarely stumble. Those who fall behind tend to stay behind for the rest of their academic lives.

A group of concerned parents, community leaders, local businesses and writers have partnered with boys who d.a.r.e. to provide monthly literary events. Each month, young boys are introduced to a new book by a different adult male role model. Documented research shows that while black women play a significant role in helping to empower young black males, it is only a black man who can model the attitudes and behaviors of successful black manhood.

In addition, boys who d.a.r.e exposes these youth to activities that focus on character education and increase social skills and cultural awareness. Our program focuses on the importance of reading by emphasizing the role of reading in everyday life. Each child leaves the event with a gift of a new book! The goal is to encourage parents and children to continue reading at home.
